The Netherlands, or Holland as it is popularly called, is a founding member of the European Union a.o. and located in North-west Europe. It is bordered by the North Sea to the west and the north, by Germany in the east and Belgium in the south. The capital city is Amsterdam but the seat of government is in The Hague. With a population of 16,5 million inhabitants, Holland is one of the world’s most densely populated countries in the world and the most densely populated country in Europe.
The Netherlands has the 16th largest economy in the world and is ranked as one of the leading European nations for attracting foreign investment. Its strengths lie in industrial activities such as food processing, financial services, chemicals, petroleum refining and electrical machinery. Companies like Shell, Philips, Heineken and Unilever to name just a few, are known the world over. Europe’s largest port is in Rotterdam. Its main activities are petrochemicals industries, general cargohandling and transshipments. International trade, banking and transport are other assets which have put Holland on the global map. A high-tech agricultural sector accounts for the fact that the Dutch rank third worldwide in value of agricultural exports.
Schiphol Airport (SPL) is Holland’s main international airport and lies closely to Amsterdam. Other main airports are Rotterdam (RTM), Maastricht (MST) and Eindhoven (EIN).
