Romania, located in Southeast Europe, shares a border with Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to the northeast and Bulgaria to the south. Romania joined the European Union on January 1st, 2007. Romania has the 9th largest territory and the 7th largest population (21.5 million) among the European Union member states. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest, the 6th largest city in the EU.
For the last decade the Romanian economy has been relatively stable and is characterized by high growth, a low unemployment rate and declining inflation. Exports have increased substantially over the past few years. Main export products are clothing and textile, industrial machinery, electronic equipment, raw materials and agricultural products to name a few. The largest trading partners are Germany and Italy. Tourism is the fastest developing sector and is characterized by a huge potential for development.
